June is National Cancer Survivor Month and National Cancer Survivors Day® is celebrated on the first Sunday in June.
In recognition of the cancer survivors in their community, Alliance Cancer Care Colorado at Red Rocks co-sponsored “SURVIVIN’ – it’s Electrifyin!,” a 1950s, Grease inspired event to honor cancer survivors in the greater Golden, Colorado area.
The free community event, held on June 4th from noon to 4 p.m. at the Red Rocks Medical Center, welcomed cancer survivors, their caregivers, and friends and family members.
The seventh annual celebration included food from local restaurants, live Grease-era music from the PJ Zahn Band, photo booth pictures, games for children, an antique car show, a dance contest, tours of the Red Rocks Medical Center, and much more. The event kicked off with a skit featuring Dr. Kevin Schewe, Dr. Rebecca Knight and the Red Rocks staff in the roles of Sandy, Danny and the T-Birds! There were several great door prizes given out including 50s themed prizes and gift baskets, spa packages, restaurant gift cards, and Denver Broncos game tickets. The afternoon wrapped up with a very special “Secrets to Survival” segment where cancer survivors, who were recognized by special pins, were invited to share their amazing stories of courage, hope, faith, perseverance, and strength. It was an extremely moving part of the program and a wonderful way to end the day.
National Cancer Survivors Day, now in its 30th year, is a celebration of life that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide every June. It is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families, and an outreach to the community.
The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. On this day, people with a history of cancer, including America’s more than 15.5 million cancer survivors, connect with each other to celebrate milestones and recognize those who have supported them along the way. It is also a day to draw attention to the ongoing challenges of cancer survivorship in order to promote more resources, research, and survivor-friendly legislation to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life.
The day was a huge success and a lot of fun! Alliance Cancer Care Colorado at Red Rocks was honored to help sponsor the event as a tribute to all of the survivors and looks forward to next year’s celebration!
